The Mustard Seed - This eclectic restaurant is one of our all-time favorites. The Mustard Seed offers many vegetarian dishes along with seafood, pasta and meat dishes. There are three locations of this Charleston restaurant. 1026 Chuck Dawley Blvd., Mount Pleasant, 843-849-0050 / 1978 Maybank Hwy., James Island, 843-762-0072 / 101 N. Main St., Summerville, 843-821-7101.
High Thyme - Visit this Sullivan's Island restaurant for an enjoyable, casual, dining experience. Kenny, the owner, often greets customers with a big smile and friendly, southern "hello." The food is American/Eclectic and the revolving menu features seafood, steak, pork, chicken, pasta and more. 2213 C Middle St., Sullivan's Island, 843-883-3536.
Coco's Cafe - Many golf vacationers pass by this unassuming French bistro that is located in a strip mall without a second glance. Don't make the same mistake. This is definitely one of the best restaurants Charleston South Carolina has. If you enjoy seafood, make sure to try Le Flounder Alain. 863 Houston Northcutt Blvd., Mount Pleasant 843-881-4949.
Jestine's Kitchen - Great Southern/Lowcountry home cooking in historic downtown Charleston. The sweet tea and fried chicken are voted best in the city year in and year out. Get their early as there is often a line out the front door. 251 Meeting St., Downtown Charleston, 843-722-7224.
The Wreck of the The Richard & Charlene - A true local's favorite. This seafood gem is known around town as "The Wreck." Don't judge this former icehouse by its exterior. Judge it by its amazing fried southern seafood. Skip the other tourist-filled seafood establishments on Shem Creek and eat at "The Wreck." 106 Haddrell St., Mount Pleasant, 843-884-0052.
The Boathouse - There are two locations of this dining establishment that serves "Simply Fresh Seafood" as well as great steaks, pastas and chops. The downtown location features a raw bar. Book your reservations as soon as your book your trip. They fill up fast. 101 Palm Blvd., Isle of Palms, 843-886-8000 / 549 E. Bay St., Downtown Charleston, 843-577-7171. *Note - the downtown location is no longer open.*
Gullah Cuisine Charlotte Jenkins and her husband Frank serve some of the best Gullah/Southern cooking you will ever put in your mouth. And if you are like most folks visiting Charleston on a golf vacation, you probably will never hear about it. Great lunch buffet. 1717 Hwy. 17 N., Mt. Pleasant, 843-881-9076.
Joseph's Restaurant - Sunday brunch is a specialty at this family-operated Charleston restaurant. But brunch is not the only good food at Joeseph's. Everything is great. Make sure to spend a mid-morning or early afternoon sipping coffee while enjoying an authentic New Orleans' beignet topped with powdered sugar. 129 Meeting St., Downtown Charleston, 843-958-8500.
