According to the Tropicana Hotel's catchphrase on their website, this hotel casino represents "The Way Las Vegas Was Meant To Be."
If they mean air-conditioners that barely work, rooms that look and feel like a one-star hotel on the side of an interstate highway, a sportsbook with 1980-style televisions and dry-erase boards for manually updating betting lines or a casino with broken-down escalators; then I would say they hit the nail on the head.
Some might like to call the Tropicana Las Vegas Hotel and Casino an affordable option for golf vacationers or other visitors to "Sin City" but after our experience there we would call it truly a cheap discount Las Vegas hotel that you might think twice before booking on your next golf vacation.
Tropicana Hotel Las Vegas - Old-School or Just Old
We were in Vegas for the second year of the Vegoose music festival held at Sam Boyd stadium and included in our VIP passes were round-trip shuttle access daily. One of the stops for the shuttle was at the Tropicana Las Vegas Hotel and Casino so we figured "what the heck" let's save a little money for more blackjack and stay at this "affordable" casino hotel.
Before this review goes any further let us say this one thing, all was not negative at the Tropicana Hotel Las Vegas. The service and the employees, from bell-hops to waitresses, were excellent.
In fact when we checked in, our representative was nice enough to upgrade us at no cost to a hotel room in the Island Tower. If these rooms are an upgrade, then we would hate to see what the regular Tropicana Las Vegas hotel rooms are like.
Whether you are on a Las Vegas golf vacation, there for a convention or just to gamble, often your hotel room is where you spend the least amount of time.
But the time spent in our room was almost unbearable when compared to the other Las Vegas hotel casinos where we have stayed in the past. The room's temperature, like the surrounding desert, went from one extreme to another. During the day it was hot and dry and the evenings were cold and dry.
The rooms at the Tropicana Hotel Las Vegas looked and felt like rooms found in a one or two-star hotel on the side of the interstate.
Before embarking on our first day of the music festival, we decided to place a few football bets in the sportsbook. Good thing we were not planning on watching games there because the tiny room had about six small televisions that looked like they were bought in 1980.
To top it off the betting lines were manually updated or should I say written on a dry-erase board. We felt like we were in a hidden basement room betting in a city that does not allow gambling.
The gambling itself at the Tropicana is like the rest of the hotel - cheap. This is not necessarily a bad thing. Finding inexpensive tables on Las Vegas Boulevard is getting almost impossible and this is a plus at the Tropicana.
However, the mood on the casino floor felt like one of the cheap discount hotels on the Nevada state line. The atmosphere was like the hotel room air - stale and dry.
We also noticed the daily inconvenience of broken escalators that led from the casino floor to the Island Tower rooms. This must be a common occourrence as the sign telling people that the escalators were broken sat ready for action right by the moving walkways at all times.
A few of the positives we can relate about the Tropicana Hotel Las Vegas are as mentioned before the service and friendly staff, our breakfast in the Garden Cafe and one late-night serving of room service prime rib.
We give the pool a positive grade as well. However as we were trying to recover one day while relaxing by the pool we realized this was impossible as the Tropicana pumps a strange array of music at a loud volume constantly for the pool patrons. Believe me, like the rest of the Tropicana, there was no party going on at this pool.
Would we at Perfect Golf Vacations stay at Tropicana Las Vegas Hotel and Casino again? Probably not. There are other cheap discount Las Vegas hotels and hotel deals in Las Vegas that we plan on trying on our next trips to Sin City.
While we wouldn't give this hotel casino our highest recommendation, we would not rule out a stay at the Tropicana Hotel Las Vegas all together. The location is good and the service and employees were excellent.
If you are looking for a Las Vegas deal and plan on spending more time on the golf courses than your hotel, then this hotel in Las Vegas might be a good fit.
