Try Fleet Landing in Charleston for Casual Seafood Dining
by Evans
This waterfront, seafood restaurant is "housed in a 1940s retired naval building on the east side of the Charleston peninsula" and provides customers with a relaxed, casual, dining experience. We recently ate at Fleet Landing for a friend's birthday party. Two of us are native Charlestonians and had never eaten at this downtown restaurant before. First and foremost, I recommend calling ahead for reservations. But if you neglect to do so, there is a nice bar and outdoor area where you can enjoy the waterfront views while you wait. Also, there is not much parking in their lot. However, there is a parking garage just across the street and a few more in walking distance. Downtown Charleston, South Carolina is a city that should be enjoyed on foot in my humble opinion anyway. This truly is a "casual" seafood restaurant. Do not expect a fancy dining experience or over-the-top, creative entrees. The dining area in Fleet Landing is wide-open, hectic and a bit loud. But the volume was low enough for us to have a conversation without raising our voices. The food was nothing to really brag about (of course I am spoiled living in this culinary city) but was prepared well enough and none of us had any complaints. Portions were not huge but they were an appropriate size if you don't like to feel stuffed. I will say this; for our group, the appetizers were the highlight of the evening. And in fact, all of us agreed a meal made up of appetizers might be on our plate next time we visit this Charleston eatery. Our favorite appetizer was the Fleet Landing Stuffed Hush Puppies. Throw out all you know about hush puppies. These concoctions were "filled with a Veloute of Lobster, Rock Shrimp, Leeks, Corn over Creole Tomato Sauce." They were quite heavy and rich but quite delicious. The cost of our meal was reasonable for waterfront dining in Charleston. While I usually go for a little higher-quality seafood restaurant, we all would gladly return to dine again. Even if you choose not to dine at Fleet Landing, drop by anyway for a drink on the deck and enjoy the great view of Charleston Harbor.
